Have you ever been afraid to ask your boss for a recommendation?

Frankly, she intimidates me, even though she can be nice sometimes. When I first started working there I was interested in going to law school--I was working as a legal istant to get some experience. Her comment when I brought it up was--"I hated law school. If my son said he wanted to become one, my husband and I would shoot him." I was shocked. I never brought it up again. I've been working for them for some time--my plans to go to law school changed--probably a subconscious reaction to her comment. I decided to try another career path not in the legal field. I am looking for recommendations. Getting one from her scares me--I feel like she's going to have something negative to say. I don't know too many other professionals and ones from my professors are so outdated. I don't know if I should even bother.
