Why did Voldemort's curse rebound and kill him in the end?

I was always confused about this because expelliarmus isn't a rebound curse and they no longer had similar cores at this point. Is it because he is still protected by his mother? I also heard a theory that it was because a wand can't kill it's owner and Harry was the true owner of the elder wand
